Avoid a DUI This Memorial Day Weekend

Don't Get a DUI This Memorial Day
If you were arrested for a DUI in Cherry Hil, NJ, schedule a consultation with Gelman Law.

A DUI or DWI in New Jersey can lead to a suspended driver’s license and expensive legal fees. You may also have to attend a class at an Intoxicated Driver Resource Center. With so many more people on the New Jersey roads during the summer months, you can also expect an increase in police officers looking for DUIs.

What to Expect During a Traffic Stop

If you are pulled over under the suspicion of driving under the influence, you can expect a few things to happen. First, the officer may ask you if you have had any drinks. At this time, it is important to be honest but to avoid admitting that you’re drunk. You should tell them if you have had one or two drinks.

At this point, they are likely to administer a BAC test. This test measures your blood alcohol content level. In New Jersey, anything over .08% is illegal. If you’re over .10%, you can expect even higher charges.

It is important to not refuse this test. Even if you haven’t been drinking or don’t believe that you’re over the limit, it is usually better to just take the test. Otherwise, they may use your refusal against you. You may still be able to dispute the test results. For example, breathalyzers are not always accurate and they have to be given properly to be accurate.

    How to Avoid Drunk Driving

It can also be helpful to take steps to avoid drunk driving. While it is usually legal to have one or two drinks, anything more than that will usually lead to a higher BAC. If possible, find a designated driver to provide transportation if you plan on drinking. If you don’t have one, there is always the option of calling a taxi or a rideshare, like Uber or Lyft.

Police are also looking for drunk drivers at certain times of the day. This is usually between 9:00 pm and 6:00 am.

It is also important to always wear your seatbelt. Police officers will be looking for other traffic violations, like distracted driving or failing to wear a seatbelt. Don’t give them any more reason to pull you over. Additionally, a seatbelt can protect you if you’re in an accident with another driver. With an increase in travelers during the holiday weekend, accidents are more likely. There will be more drivers on the road who are unfamiliar with the roads and may be fatigued from traveling for long hours.
