About Oaklyn, NJ

Oaklyn is a borough located in Camden County, New Jersey. Oaklyn was first settled by a group of Quakers who had emigrated from Ireland in 1681, who purchased land from the local Native Americans and established the Newton Colony along Newton Creek. As the area developed, Oaklyn was home to the intersection of two highways, one from the Delaware River to Egg Harbor, the other from Atlantic City to Camden. Following the Revolutionary War, a group of individuals built a racetrack, which remained in operation until 1846. Thereafter, the farms along Newton Creek were divided and developed into “Oakland the Beautiful”, for the numerous oak trees in the area. The borough’s name was formally changed to Oaklyn in 1894 to avoid confusion with another municipality in New Jersey named Oakland. Oakland was formally incorporated as a borough in 1905, taking portions of Haddon Township.

Frequently Asked Questions about Oaklyn, NJ Criminal Defense

FAQ: Do I need an attorney if I want to plead guilty to my charges?

If you have decided that you want to plead guilty to your criminal charges, it is highly advisable to consult with an experienced criminal defense attorney before entering your plea. An attorney may be able to evaluate your case and provide you with a knowledgeable assessment of the relative strength of the prosecution’s case and your case, especially after your attorney has conducted an independent investigation and potentially uncovered evidence that can be used in your defense. If you decide that you still want to plead guilty, an attorney can negotiate with the prosecution to obtain a plea agreement or a more favorable plea agreement, which can include the dismissal or reduction of certain charges and a less severe sentence than you might otherwise receive.

FAQ: When will I be released after being arrested?

Once you are arrested, you will appear before the court in a hearing known as an arraignment. At an arraignment, the prosecution formally presents the crimes that you are being charged with, to which you will plead guilty, not guilty, or (when applicable) no contest. At the arraignment, the court will also decide whether you will be released or whether you will continue to be held in jail until your trial. In many cases, criminal defendants are released at arraignment, with the obligation to follow certain conditions such as avoiding contact with any alleged victims or potential witnesses in the trial and not being arrested for any new criminal offenses.
